The transcribing of my father’s World War two naval journal (1944-45) is a project I have been hoping to complete for some time now and I’m glad to say it is finally done. I could write a lot of my thoughts about reading and transcribing this diary, but my hope is that it speaks for itself. For family it will be interesting for many various reasons. For others, I hope it’s interesting to see a 12+ month historical day-by-day account of a sailor, including notes about the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan and other war events of varying historical significance. The U.S.S. Collett Web site has a lot of interesting information to that end, including another serviceman’s diary, timeline that mentions ADH as a shipmate, and more.

I wanted to maintain the text in a “raw” format with all typos, abbreviations, etc. intact, and I also tried to indicate any sections of writing that were atypical in how they were laid out on the page. This may make reading somewhat more tedious, however it retains some of the experience of reading the journal in person, the same feeling of which I hope the images in this post convey. To enhance the reading of this and to give historical context, I’ve spent some time linking keywords to other World War II Web pages for more information.

Enjoy!

I will fully admit- keeping in touch with family is not my strong point.
Have I called you up lately just to talk and see how things are with you? Probably not.
Do I send postcards to people just to tell them I miss them? No.
Does that mean I don’t think about family every day?
Of course not.

A song that invokes a specific, vivid memory of playing video games with my brothers,
the smells- of dirt, of water, or blooming trees and flowers-
from the garden that instantly transport me to Griffith, IN,
a story on the radio about the military that reminds me of my cousins
who have (I think it’s fair to say)
transformed their lives into something I never foresaw.

Every day, these easily dismissible tidbits occur in the world,
causing realities to seep out of my consciousness,
without my expectations,
without my criticism,
without my default filters of daily living.
These things flow out of me and stay in focus beyond the perceived events,
through the passing time of hours, days, weeks, months, years,
as if they will live well beyond me.

“It’s not a panacea.”

“[He] will bring tremendous experience with strategic planning and business leadership.”

“As business confidence in the recovery improves they will begin adding to their permanent staff”

This might be my most snarky post yet, but I have to vent or I might go nuts. I’m in economist overload. Even NPR, God love them, succumbs to the soundbites from subject matter ”experts” who spew jargon that at times seems as natural as the coos of a newborn. Are these people human?

I hope Joshua Brown is right. We need a break. Recently I’ve heard some complaints voiced about the lack of design thinking perspectives in the news. This really spoke to me- as a creative person, project manager, and simply as a person who likes to understand the inner working of things. I see a basic difference of observation versus action; process for process’ sake versus being results-driven.

If we really want change, we need people like engineers, architects, web/interactive designers, composers, physicists, surgeons, etc.- those with the proven skills to bring results- working with the economists and policy makers to bring about real solutions and results. Somehow there’s a comfort level- I’ll admit I experience it despite my best inclinations- in hearing this babble; again, just like the unintelligible yet soothing sounds of a peaceful baby. Does comfort usually create a sense of urgency or stifle it?

Do you know of a good example that demonstrates this kind of thinking and collaboration? I’d love to hear about it.

A lot of people already know that I’ve gone mostly (as opposed to strictly) vegetarian again. I thought I’d try to explain this, as people often have questions about why/how/etc.

Maybe not the diet change I should be looking for...

As I thought about the times that I reverted from a more healthy diet to an even less-ideal one, two malignant factors stuck out to me: money and a want-it-now paradigm. I quickly realized that neither reason should prevent me from making more healthy choices now, at least the ones that are within my means.

Initially, my plan was to simply force myself to eat healthier by cooking more, not eating fast food, and making all around better choices. Successfully not eating meat takes a lot of planning to get protein and all the nutrients that one needs. However, after this moment of decision (Jannell can tell you how the guy with steaks in a hand-held cooler in the back of his flatbed truck pushed me over the edge) I immediately began hearing all sorts of information to confirm this change of lifestyle. I had several of those experiences that make you wonder if taking note was due to a heightened awareness from having the subject on your mind or if it was simply coincidence that things would happen now: self vs. fate. Either way the reason to not eat meat (especially red meat) started to pile up (you have to click the link to get the intended pun).

All this has snowballed to my own self-education about food in general. I’ve learned a lot about how our bodies process sugars, preservatives and how they are used in foods, which products to buy organic and which aren’t worth the extra $$$, etc. There is so much to learn! In a nutshell, I have switched back to organic milk and organic spinach, since these are two of the organic foods to reap the most benefits from; I have actively tried to cut down on things with high-fructose corn syrup (although my love of pop makes that one of the most difficult changes to make); and I make vegetarian (or vegan) meals at home almost all the time.

All in all, I have learned a lot, I feel better, and I feel good about how my choices are impacting the world we live in. Now I just have to keep this going!

Next steps: make the Muncie Farmer’s Market a weekly instead of option event in my schedule and put more thoughtful planning in my garden (using Maria as a resource for the latter).
